Indian Police Services (IPS)

A civil service that comes under All India Services is theIndian Police Service (IPS). In 1948, a year after India became independent from the British Raj, it has taken the place of the Imperial Police.

TheIndian Police Services (IPS) is a highly regarded and prestigious cadre of police officers under the Indian government. IPS rank officers or similar are responsible for maintaining law and order in a country's states and union territories. Becoming an IPS Officer is a dream for many UPSC Aspirants.

IPS officers are a selection based on the results of a merit list of a Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is an exceptionally competitive test, handpicking only the finest talents to embrace the esteemed IPS cadre. Once selected, IPS officers undergo hard and strict training and development to be ready to take up the important roles that they will be entrusted with. IPS officers bear the crucial responsibility of upholding law and order throughout the state.

IPS officers have multiple as well critical responsibilities of ensuring citizens' security, like preventing crime, investigating, proactively preventing and detecting crimes, and handling emergencies. They are generally heading the law enforcement agencies, such as CBI, IB and NIA, and Raw, to prevent organized crime, terrorism, and other nationwide security threats.

Examination Procedure For UPSC

A candidate must pass the Civil Services Examination administered by the Union Public Services Examination to become an IPS officer. We all are aware that just a few hundred of the approximately 8 lakh applicants who apply each year are chosen to become IPS officers.

As a UPSC Aspirant, you need to apply for the Civil Service Examination by participating in the UPSC application form released by the union public service commission every year.

The Process is mentioned below

Register for the UPSC IPS Officer Exam.
An efficient preparation strategy is essential if you want to succeed on the IPS exam.

  1. Take the UPSC Prelims.
  2. Take the UPSC Mains.
  3. Consider attending the personal interview

IPS syllabus has divided into two main stages

(i) Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) -

This is the initial stage of the selection process, where candidates are assessed for their eligibility to appear in the Main Examination.

(ii) Main Examination (Written) -

At this stage, candidates are evaluated for various services and positions based on a comprehensive written examination.
The IPS syllabus for the Civil Services Prelims Exam consists of two papers, Paper I (General Studies – I) and Paper II (CSAT/General Studies – II). Below are the topics covered in each paper

Paper I (General Studies – I):
  1. Current affairs: national and international importance.
  2. Unfolding the Past: History of India and The Indian National Movement Delve into the captivating chronicles of India's rich historical tapestry and the remarkable Indian National Movement that paved the way for independence.
  3. Beyond Borders: Exploring Indian and World Geography Embark on a voyage of geographical wonders, navigating the diverse terrains of India and the globe.
  4. In the Realm of Governance: Understanding Indian Polity Unlock the intricacies of India's democratic framework, exploring the Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, and Rights Issues.
  5. Empowering Lives: Economic and Social Development Venture into the realm of sustainable development, addressing challenges like poverty, inclusion, demographics, and social sector initiatives.
  6. Preserving Our Planet: Environmental Ecology and Climate Change Step into the realm of ecological consciousness, where biodiversity thrives, and climate change concerns us all.
  7. General Science.
Paper II (CSAT/General Studies – II):
  1. Comprehension.
  2. Interpersonal skills, including communication skills.
  3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
  4. Decision-making and problem-solving.
  5. General mental ability.
  6. Foundations in Mathematics: Mastering Numbers and Relations (Class X Level)
  7. Embarking on Data Insights: Navigating Charts, Graphs, and Tables (Class X Level)

The Indian Police Service offers two avenues to become an IPS Officer

  1. Promotion of State Police Service Officers:

    Accomplished officers from the State Police Service can be promoted to the IPS based on their exceptional service record, experience, and merit.

  2. Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC):

    The UPSC administers the prestigious Civil Services Examination, attracting a vast pool of 5-8 lakh aspiring candidates annually. This comprehensive exam serves as the gateway to various elite services, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Revenue Service, and Indian Audit and Accounts Service, among others.

Notably, there was once a provision for a Limited Competitive Examination (LCE) as a recruitment mode for the IPS. However, this mode was discontinued in 2018, following the Supreme Court of India's affirmation of the Center's decision.

The Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE 2024) for the IPS consists of three well-defined stages:

  1. Civil Services (Preliminary) Exam: Scheduled for May 26th, 2024, this preliminary stage acts as the first screening process to assess candidates' foundational knowledge and understanding.

  2. Civil Services (Main) Exam: Slated to commence from September 2024 onwards, the Main Exam is a rigorous evaluation of candidates' comprehensive knowledge, analytical abilities, and writing prowess.

  3. UPSC Personality Test: The final stage is the UPSC Personality Test, which assesses candidates' personality traits, communication skills, and overall suitability for the esteemed IPS and other civil services.
