  • Paper-I to Paper-VII decide your actual rank. That's 1750 marks in total.
  • After the Mains comes the interview, worth 275 marks. Add both, and your final merit list is out of 2025 marks.
  • UPSC holds the exam in two sessions a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

UPSC Mains 2026 Syllabus

The UPSC Mains 2026 syllabus looks big at first, but it's easier once you break it into parts.

Paper

What It Covers

Essay

Two essays from a list of topics. Stay close to the topic and write in a clear, simple way.

GS Paper I

Indian history, culture, geography, and society.

GS Paper II

The Constitution, governance, social justice, and international relations.

GS Paper III

Economy, environment, science, technology, and internal security.

GS Paper IV

Ethics, integrity, and honesty, tested through real-life case studies.

Optional Subject

One subject was picked from 48 options, like geography, history, or public administration. It has two papers of 250 marks each.

The core syllabus doesn't change much every year, but the way questions are framed shifts with current events. So read the newspaper daily along with your books.

How to Prepare for UPSC Mains 2026

Mains are different from prelims. Here, you write full answers, not just mark an option.

  • Learn your syllabus well. This stops you from wasting time on the wrong topics.
  • Practice answer writing daily. It trains you to organise your thoughts and finish on time.
  • Read the newspaper daily. The Hindu or Indian Express works well, since UPSC often links current events with GS topics.
  • Join a good test series. Mock tests show your weak areas before the real exam does.
  • Revise often. Reading once is not enough, so return to your notes again and again.
  • Plan your time well. A simple weekly timetable keeps you on track.

How to Download UPSC Mains 2026 Admit Card

The UPSC Prelims Admit Card 2026 usually releases the Mains admit card two to three weeks before the exam. Here's how to download it:

  1. Visit the official website, upsc.gov.in, or upsconline.nic.in.
  2. Find the "e-Admit Card" section, then click the Civil Services (Main) Examination link.
  3. Enter your registration ID or roll number, along with your date of birth.
  4. Your admit card opens as a PDF. Download it and print two or three copies.

Check your name, photo, exam centre, and timing once you have it. Report any mistake to UPSC right away, not at the last moment.

UPSC Mains 2026 Exam Centre List

UPSC conducts the Mains exam across many cities in India. The exact list can change a little each year, but here are the major centres:

Ahmedabad

Chennai

Dispur (Guwahati)

Mumbai

Shillong

Aizawl

Cuttack

Jaipur

Patna

Shimla

Bengaluru

Dehradun

Jammu

Prayagraj

Thiruvananthapuram

Bhopal

Delhi

Kolkata

Raipur

Vijayawada

Chandigarh

Dispur (Guwahati)

Lucknow

Ranchi

While filling your application, you choose your centre preference, but the final centre also depends on seat availability in that city. Your confirmed centre is printed on your admit card, so check the address right away and visit a day early if you can.

UPSC Mains Previous Year Question Papers

Solving old papers is one of the smartest ways to prepare. It shows you the real difficulty level and how UPSC frames its questions.

  • Solve at least five years of papers for every GS subject and your optional subject.
  • Notice the repeated themes, even when the wording changes each year.
  • Time yourself while solving, just like the real exam.

You can find UPSC Mains previous year papers on the official UPSC website or on trusted coaching platforms.
